Description: A fragment of a silver signet ring. The fragment consists of the bezel and a short length of the hoop either side. The bezel is of rectangular shape with radiused corners. The central design has the appearance of the letter ’I’ with a sprig at each side, all within a rectangular rope border. A similar sprig design is also present on the outside surface of the hoop. On the inside of the bezel there is an engraved letter, possibly a ’B’.

The ring is likely to have belonged to a merchant, the central device being his personal mark. Seal rings at this time were particularly popular as an alternative to the conventionally shaped seal matrix.

A 15th century copper-alloy signet ring with a very similar device is illustrated in the Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum Medieval Catalogue (p. 46, No. 17).
