Description:
|
An iron wedge used for splitting wood or stone. It is sub-rectangular in plan, and the thickness tapers from mid-way along the length to the working edge. The blunt end has turned-over edges as a result of repeated hammer blows. The date of the wedge is uncertain, with a possible range of Roman to post medieval. (The finder notes that it was found on a Romano-British settlement, very close to two Roman fort locations.)
