Description:
|
A zoomorphic copper-alloy object cast in the form of a three-dimensional fantastic animal. The animal has a panther-like head and a dragonesque body with two legs, a long tail and a pair of wings. The tail is coiled under the body, and is attached to the end of the legs and the underside of the animal's neck, such that it creates an openwork design. The tip of the tail is turned downwards and rearwards at the junction with the neck.
The art style is Romanesque, but the influence of the earlier Viking Urnes style is apparent in the coiled openwork form of the body. The object is most likely to date to the 12th century, when the two art styles were in the process of merging together.
The object is of uncertain function, but, except for the fact that it is fully moulded on both sides, it resembles the slightly earlier Urnes style mounts that are believed to have been sown directly onto some backing material by way of the openwork (e.g. see UKDFD 8413 and UKDFD 13045).
