Description:
|
Medieval portable candlestick holder probably dating to the 14/15th Century. These rarely seen artefacts are known in London including an ingenious adjustable version allowing for three different positions fixed by a folding tab. There is also a similar one to this particular find illustrated in Craft Industry and Everyday Life: Finds from Medieval York, this from Bedern in an early-15thC context. Three other examples from Hull (Excavations in High Street and Blackfriargate) these all coming from 14thC deposits. Although not common finds and these artefacts are seldom seen, it is quite likely that some, when found have gone unrecognised particularly as they can easily become crushed and damaged.
