Description:		A small single loop buckle, complete with copper-alloy pin. The frame is D-shaped with a short narrowed strap bar and somewhat resembles a dumpy miniature horseshoe. The front face has wide shallow recesses on either side of the pin, which reflect the shape of the frame and were possibly originally inlaid with enamel. Parts of the outer edge of the frame have crumbled, giving the buckle a somewhat irregular appearance. The dating suggested below should be regarded as tentative, as no close parallel has been traced.

Description:		A small zoomorphic buckle dating to the late Anglo-Saxon period. The frame is moulded in the form of two opposing animal heads, each biting the ends of a narrowed strap bar which retains the corroded remains of an iron pin. To the front of the buckle, each animal head is decorated with a circular recess for an eye, both of which contain a degraded enamel infill.

Description:		An incomplete mid-length section of a decorated sheet copper-alloy strap fitting, most likely a buckle plate of the Early Medieval period. The decoration (front only) consists of compass-engraved concentric circles arranged in a pattern of conjoined quincunxes, the larger central elements of which comprise a dot and two circles, and the smaller outer elements, a dot and single circle. There is a triple dashed-line border, but, probably due to edge damage, it survives on one side only. The back is plain with large patches of solder at each end. No rivet holes are present on the surviving length. A closely similar pattern of decoration occurs on a buckle plate illustrated by Sonja Marzinzik (see References below) as an example of her Type 11.16. She describes fittings of this type as 'Buckles with long, narrow plate' and notes that they can have a length of up to 243mm. Some of the plates are attached to backings of organic material, such as antler or bone, although the solder on the back of the present object would indicate a metal backplate.

Description:		A single loop D-shaped buckle with folded sheet-metal plate dating to the late Anglo-Saxon period. The frame has simple incised decoration to the front face, with five peripheral projections and heavy iron staining to the outer edge. The plate has not been slotted for pin attachment, instead, a hole has been made close to the frame's strap bar. The hole retains corroded product remains suggesting that an iron pin was inserted at this point. A singular iron rivet for strap attachment purposes remains at the opposite end. The shape of the frame can be compared with finer buckle examples of the period, noting the lobed positions created from the original zoomorphic moulding, UKDFD 40559 & UKDFD 14218 clearly display these patterns in the Viking 'Ringerike' style. The buckle casting then degrades to a much simpler form with applied linear engraving; UKDFD 31283, or multiple stamped ring-and-dot motifs; UKDFD 19734.

Description:		A single loop zoomorphic buckle dating to the Anglo-Scandinavian period. The frame, inspired with Viking Ringerike influence, is moulded in the form of two conjoined and opposed boars with a narrowed strap bar at the base. Each head has a long snout with detailed tusk element, and a moulded pellet for an eye. The bodies of each boar arch to create the buckle frame, and each has a long crested mane representing bristles. Both manes terminate at the centre of the frame with a decorative scrolled knop, (one side being incomplete). There is a deeply grooved notch on the outside edge of the frame for locating the missing pin. The back of the frame is unusual in that it is also moulded, but lacks the same level of detail as the front. The boar representation on Anglo-Saxon helmets and sword pommels is believed to have offered strength and protection. The Norse god Freyr kept a boar called Gullinbursti, meaning ‘Golden mane’ and his sister, Freyja, rode a wild boar into engagement called Hildesvini, ‘Battle Swine’.

Description:		A single loop D-shaped buckle frame of the late Anglo-Saxon period. The frame has a lobe to each outside edge, and a central trilobate projection opposite the strap bar. The face is decorated with eight ring-and-dot motifs. The buckle has a typical reddish brown patination found on objects of the period, particularly those associated with Anglo-Scandinavian and Anglo-Norman artefacts. The casting is crude and the applied decoration is very simple. The shape can be compared with finer buckle examples of the period, noting the lobed positions created from the original zoomorphic moulding, UKDFD 40559 & UKDFD 14218 clearly display these patterns in the Viking 'Ringerike' style. Description:		A small but fairly weighty single loop D-shaped buckle of the Anglo-Saxon period. The unusually deep frame is D-shaped in section, with a flat base and curved top edge. The front of the frame is decorated with multiple oblique grooving, the back is plain. The short and narrowed strap bar is rectangular in section and an iron pin with turned over nose is still attached. A small part of one of the buckle plate attachment loops is fused to the strap bar via the iron pin.

Description:		A lozenge-shaped hinged object, most likely a buckle plate, with a discoidal terminal and a rounded lobe on either side at the hinged end. At the centre of the terminal and of each lobe there is a rivet hole for attachment. The holes in the lobes retain dome-headed rivets. A generally similar object from the PAS database, linked below, has a very long surviving rivet, which suggests the alternative possibility of part of a hinge for a wooden box. Cf. PAS LIN-421FD4
