An apparent casting flaw has resulted in a marked angular misalignment between the suspension loop and the design.
Of the MoL stud cited below, the authors comment:
"The design is not truly heraldic, but allusive, combining the lion from the English royal arms with the fleur-de-lis of the French in a purely decorative fashion. The inclusion of the fleurs-de-lis suggests a date after 1340, when Edward III incorporated them into the English royal arms."
A cast copper-alloy harness pendant with suspension mount attached. Both parts are in the form of a scallop shell, with a convex front and concave back. The mount is centrally pierced for a rivet, which is now missing. The lower suspension fork is formed by folding the slotted end of the mount backwards over an axis bar from which the pendant is held captive. The pendant is centrally pierced, possibly for a missing decorative part. Both pendant and mount have simple curvilinear decoration to represent the contours of a shell, and both retain traces of gilding.

The image of the scallop shell represents pilgrimage (St James de Compostela) and is often depicted on horse harness pendants and other artefacts of the period.
A complete shield-shaped heraldic harness pendant of the medieval period. The pendant depicts a quartered shield of arms with a lion rampant in each quarter. The lions in the second and third quarters retain red enamel and those in the first and fourth quarters retain traces described by the recorder as 'blue', but possibly originally black and affected by copper corrosion products. The four quarters have traces of gilt present, both in the field and on parts of the animals. The latter situation is most likely due to the whole area being gilded before any enamel was applied.

The arms seem most likely to be those of the County (and Counts) of Hainaut, a Low Countries lordship within the Holy Roman Empire. These are blazoned: Quarterly, 1 and 4 Or a lion rampant Sable, armed and langued Gules; 2 and 3 Or a lion rampant Gules, armed and langued Azure, or In non-heraldic language, a black lion on a gold field in the first and fourth quarters, and a red lion on a gold field in the second and third quarters. The black lions are described as having red tongues and claws, and the red lions as having blue tongues and claws, but these minor embellishments are unlikely to be found on small items like harness pendants.

Note
King Edward III married Philippa of Hainaut, a daughter of William I, Count of Hainaut, in 1327, shortly after he ascended the throne.
The shield is of elongated, round-bottomed shape and decorated with incised horizontal grooves to create the heraldic blazon 'Barry of Twelve'. Unfortunately, no enamel inlay or metal plating survives, so tracing the arms is unlikely to be possible. The shape of the shield and the use of a separate rivet and rove might indicate that the present stud is slightly later than the more usual type with integral rivet and more angular shield, as, for example, PAS: KENT-2699E2.
