A stirrup-shaped silver-gilt finger ring with a secondary bezel in the form of two clasped hands. The main stirrup-shaped bezel terminates in a small semi-spherical knob, in imitation of a gemstone. The secondary bezel, depicting clasped hands, is diametrically opposite the main bezel. The shape of the hands is moulded, but the fingers and the cuffs of the 'sleeves' are defined by engraved lines. The hoop between the two bezels is of slender D-shaped cross-section.

The earliest stirrup-shaped finger rings date from the mid 12th century, but the style remained popular until the end of the medieval period. Rings with two bezels, however, are often associated with the 15th century (see below), which tends to suggest that the present ring might have been made towards the later end of the suggested date range.

Rings bearing the clasped hands device are known as 'fede rings', from the Italian, 'mani in fede' - hands in faith. The emblem has been used on finger rings since Roman times, but usually as a single bezel. Two other examples of its use with a second bezel are illustrated in C C Oman's Victoria And Albert Museum Catalogue of Rings 1930 (Nos. 630 and 636). Both are dated 15th century, but neither is stirrup shaped.

An elaborately decorated gold finger ring of the late medieval or early post-medieval period. The bezel is rectangular and engraved with a seated figure holding a shield (depicting a fleur-de-lis?) with the right hand, and resting the left hand on a sword. The hoop is moulded in the form of two twisted bands, one of which carries an engraved inscription on the outer surface. The inscription is in black-letter style with leafy sprays after each word. It is fully legible, but due to the twist, it has not been possible to read from the images*. The ring has been damaged while in the ground, and is severely distorted as a result.

* Subsequently read by British Museum as: le*de/rme*/*-ma*/*le*/*am*/m--*, where the asterisk represents the leafy sprays. The Museum has suggested the inscription might be interpreted as 'le desire lui a le amour', or something similar, meaning 'desire belongs to love'.
