Description:

A small scallop-shaped strap-end fitting. The fitting consists of a sheet-metal plate with a rectangular bar mount of D-shaped cross-section riveted to the square end with two rivets. Interestingly, the bar mount is centrally recessed on the inboard side, the reason for which is uncertain. The grooves of the scaallop-shell are represented by incised radial lines and there is a third (but vacant) rivet hole at the scalloped end of the plate. The fitting is a variant of the more usual shield-shaped type (e.g. see UKDFD 45610 and UKDFD 58416).

The way in which these fittings were used is uncertain. A possible use as a fastener, in conjunction with a folding strap clasp, is suggested on page 116 of MoL Dress Accessories, but UKDFD 56337, where the shield-shaped plate is riveted to a separate copper-alloy plate, raises doubts about this suggestion. The fitting may simply be a decorative strap terminal.

The otherwise similar shield-shaped fittings illustrated in MoL ’Dress Accessories’ (see References below) were recovered from ceramic phase 11 (1350-1400).
