A complete copper-alloy purse bar of the Tudor period. The purse bar is an assembly of two major parts, a T-shaped handle and a suspension bar. The T-shaped handle consists of a sub-circular-section bar with biconical terminals and a cuboid stem with an integral shaft extending downwards from the centre. The suspension bar consists of a longer, sub-square-section bar with sub-conical terminals and a central cuboid block, which has been drilled vertically through the centre. The shaft on the stem of the handle is fitted through the drilled hole and secured by riveting the end after fitting a small collar. The clearance between the shaft and the hole permits the handle to swivel freely.

This is one of the later types of purse bar, and was in use towards the end of the period when they were in fashion. The swivelling loop handle of the earlier purse bars has been replaced by a swivelling bar, and there are no longer any integral stitching loops on the suspension bar.

An incomplete and severely corroded late medieval to early Tudor period purse bar assembly. The assembly consists of the bar itself, part of the swivelling suspension loop and one suspension lug of the pendent frame. The bar has a central shield-shaped boss and short side bars. The central boss has moulded decoration on each face, possibly a saltire with a small motif in each angle, but the detail is unclear due to corrosion.

For a better preserved purse bar of similar type, see UKDFD 52420.

Metal purse frames were fashionable towards the end of the medieval period, making their first appearance around 1460. By 1550 they were no longer fashionable and except for a few illustrated examples from the latter part of the 16th century, purses progressed to being much simpler in design being made almost entirely of cloth or leather.
