The pommel has ten irregular facets to the periphery of each side and outer edge, and a large rectangular aperture at its base and a smaller aperture at the top for attachment to the tang of a blade. The pommel has an outer shell of copper-alloy (latten), around an iron core.

The pommel is of Oakeshott Type I-1, and is fairly unusual having ten faceted sides. Only one further latten example has been traced, that being attached to an incomplete falchion sword housed in the Koninklijk Legermuseum in Brussels (Dated 14th century - No 5169), and illustrated in Blair (see references below & image 6 above).

A late medieval to early post-medieval copper-alloy sword or dagger pommel. The open end has a flat blunt edge allowing the artefact to be placed standing unsupported on a flat surface. It has a variable thickness ranging from 0.9mm to 3.5mm at this open end. The artefact is an elliptical-cylindrical, measuring 21mm x 17mm at the open end, with a closed domed apex. At the centre of the domed end is a sub-rectangular aperture measuring 6mm in length, 3mm at the narrower end and 4mm at the wider end. This perforation would have been used to secure the pommel onto the shaft of the handle. This end also has two opposing moulded decorative projections just below the commencement of the sides tapering in to form the dome. One of these integral projections extends out further than the over and also has a more defined curve with pointed tip. This may possibly be thought of as an abstract representation of a bird's profile the longer more curved projection representing a beak and the other integral projection possibly a feathery tuft at the back of the bird's head. These projections increase the width to 37.0mm. The outer surface is decorated all over, except for the two projections, with diagonal longitudinal grooves set c.8 mm apart. Between these diagonal grooves are slightly curved transverse grooves which seem to pair up with similar opposing transverse grooves to form areas of flattened slightly raised sub-oval pellets of 8mm length.
