											A group of plain, solid-cast, two-piece buttons with embedded looped wire shanks. The buttons are biconvex with a polished surface overall. Of the thirteen buttons in the group, two have intact embedded copper-alloy wire shanks (Image 2). The remainder have only the stumps of embedded wire shanks, approximately half of which are copper-alloy and the remainder iron. The buttons were recovered over a period of several years.<br />
<br />
Buttons of this type are recorded in MoL <em>Dress Accessories</em> (Nos. 1384-1395) from ceramic phases 8-12 (1230-1450). They are usually made of bronze with a high-tin content. Brian Read (see References below) comments: "These buttons frequently have a high tin content or a polished tin coating, both of which may create an appearance of silver."<br />

											A cast one-piece copper-alloy button with an integral drilled shank. The front of the button is slightly convex and decorated with two incised concentric circles around an indented central dot. The surface has been polished, but now has several scratches. The back of the button is generally flat, but has multiple irregular marks from the mould. The shank is of rectangular cross-section with a rounded end. Its surface is scored with coarse file marks.<br />

											A late medieval cast one-piece button; heart-shaped; flat; drilled rectangular-section shank with rounded end; linear decoration forming an inverted heart shape (or possibly arrowhead?) with opposing oblique lines either side. Grooves of decoration retain an uncertain deposit, possibly traces of original gilding or inlay.<br />
