An unusual cast copper-alloy hair pin of the Roman period. The pin has a biconical head, below which there is in turn, a circular collar, a short length of beaded bar and a larger cuboid moulding. The outer cone of the biconical head appears to have had radial grooves or notches, but the detail is unclear due to corrosion. The cuboid moulding has a ring-and-dot motif on each of its four side faces. Below the cuboid moulding there is a short length of shaft with an undercut, but the remainder of the shaft has broken off and is now missing.
A generally similar type of pin is recorded as PAS: BERK-A0B836.

A complete copper-alloy hair or dress pin. The head is of plain, solid, near-hemispherical form, but with a large radius between the rounded top and the flat underside. Below the head, the circular-section shaft is initially of uniform diameter, but it then swells to form an elongated barrel shape (to prevent loosening in use) before progressively tapering to a blunt point. There is a rounded bend in the shaft between the underside of the head and the swollen portion, and several wavy bends are also present in the tapered section. The upper bend is probably deliberate, as it occurs on many pins of this type (see similar examples below).
