A sprung snap fastener (or 'snap hook'), most likely for use on horse-harness. The fastener consists of a rectangular loop for permanent attachment to a strap, and a hooked extension projecting from the centre of the outer end of the loop. At the junction of the extension and the loop, on the hooked side, there is a moulded rectangular strip to which a steel leaf spring was originally riveted.

A typical use of a fastener of this sort would be the quick attachment and detachment of the reins to and from the bridle bit.
