Description: A jeton dated 1549, struck at the time that Philip II was brought from Spain by his father, Charles V, for a 'Grand Tour' of the Low Countries, over which he subsequently ruled. During the course of this tour, Philip was invested as Count of Holland and Count of Zeeland. The significance of the obverse legend (and design) is uncertain. Feuardent (see References below) lists the jeton twice, firstly under a heading that suggests it relates to a Guild of Archers, and secondly under a heading that relates it to the visit of Charles V described above. Dugniolle associates the jeton with the investiture of Philip II as Count of Holland. Obv. legend: POVR DE DEVX ARCS VISER AV LIEV - For two bows to aim at the place Rev. legend: TOVT MON ESPOIR EST EN DIEV 1549 - All my hope is in God - 1549
