Description:

A decorative cast copper-alloy toggle of the late Iron Age to early Roman period. The body is cylindrical, and symmetrically moulded with deep oblique grooving to each side of a projecting transverse attachment loop. One end of the body has a flat-bottomed circular recess with a blocked core hole at the centre. The other end is irregularly convex with erupted iron corrosion at the centre and possible traces of displaced and decomposed enamel in the surrounding annulus.

The toggle would appear to have an iron-wire core to provide additional strength. In antiquity, corrosion and associated expansion of the exposed ends of the core have caused it to erupt through the enamelled annulus at one end of the body, thus creating the irregular convex appearance. At the other end, the iron core has completely disintegrated, and the recess is now empty. The reinforcement of the toggle indicates a heavy-duty use, which is inconsistent with their usual identification as personal dress accessories. A use associated with horse-harness seems more likely, at least in the present case.

It is worth noting the similarities to SF2680, and also the effects of erupted corrosion to LVPL-4FACC3.

See also UKDFD 41634 and UKDFD 9336 as other examples of copper-alloy castings with iron cores.
