A double loop annular iron buckle with surviving iron pin and incomplete hooked iron plate. The frame is of flattened rectangular cross section and may have had punched frontal decoration. The hooked end of the plate is missing.

The buckle is likely to be from a spur. Ross Whitehead (see References below) notes that:
"Annular buckles fitted with buckle plates ending in a hook (Nos. 258-259) are spur buckles of the 15th and 16th centuries. They superseded buckles with cast integral plates and hooked ends for this purpose after c.1400."
Whitehead's buckles are both copper alloy, but they are otherwise closely similar to the present iron specimen.

Description:

A double loop annular buckle, the frame of which is designed to represent a fantastic animal. Mouldings of the animal's head and 'tail' project from opposite ends of the frame, which itself represents the animal's body. The animal's head extends from a long neck and is dog-like in appearance with upright moulded ears, but lacking other features. The 'tail', which has circular openwork and is decorated on the front with punched dots, somewhat resembles a Lombardic letter 'm'. The front of the body has concentric punched decoration overall. The folded sheet-metal plate and pin survive intact, the former with punched border-line decoration and the latter with indented transverse grooves at the attachment end. The plate retains two dome-headed copper-alloy rivets.

A note regarding dating
It would seem that the earliest double loop annular buckles were made with a separate strap bar (see UKDFD 41186 and PAS: SUR-CC63F2), their construction being similar to that of 'disc-on-pin' brooches of the same period (see UKDFD 37592). The present buckle, with its apparently integral strap bar, is unlikely to be materially earlier than those with separate strap bars, but shared characteristics (size, annular shape, decorative treatment, etc.) suggest that it might be of broadly similar date. The animal-head moulding is of late Romanesque style and is comparable to those decorating annular brooches illustrated by Nigel Mills in Medieval Artefacts (see References below) and dated to the 12th century. (It is noted that a broadly similar annular buckle, but with bird-shaped head and tail mouldings, is illustrated by Ross Whitehead (see References below) but dated much later.)
