A copper-alloy strap fitting with openwork and relief-moulded decoration in the Romanesque style of the Norman and early Plantagenet period. The fitting is sub-rectangular with an open end to the left and an m-shaped loop to the right, the central limb of which projects inwards to the centre of the aperture. The openwork design depicts an uncertain long-tailed quadruped walking right, possibly with its head turned rearwards. The central limb of the m-shaped end has an uncertain moulding on the front (possibly a rudimentary animal's head) and a short sub-conical protrusion on the back. The fitting has four rivet holes, two in moulded bosses at the left end and two at the right. Three of the rivet holes retain copper-alloy rivets. The back of the fitting is plain.

Note re Identification
The m-shaped looped end and the asymmetry of the the object suggest that it might be an early single loop strap clasp. Later strap clasps with similar m-shaped loops, but with two internal projections rather than one, are illustrated in Ross Whitehead's 'Buckles 1250-1800' as Nos. 245-247. A variant of the Whitehead types with a single internal projection, and thus more comparable with the present object, is recorded as PAS-75D66D.
