A cast copper-alloy zoomorphic terminal in the form of an animal head with long curved neck. The head has an elongated snout or beak, two impressed dots for eyes and moulded ears. There is a short triangular-shaped cusp projecting at the throat, and below, the remaining neck appears oval in section and ends with no evidence of further moulding.

The object is presently enigmatic. Its form, although very simple, appears to be influenced by Romanesque design which likely dates it to the medieval period. SWYOR-F977F1 is another example of this object, also with a fracture to the neck element in the same place. The object could have been utilised to suspend a vessel in the same manner as mounts attached to earlier Anglo-Saxon hanging bowls, (example, SF-C74ECE), but the lack of body in both cases makes this identification only plausible.

The former was riveted to the side of the dish. The latter was used to prevent burnt hands when lifting and moving it. Chafing dishes were typically filled with glowing charcoal and used to keep dishes and plates of food warm at the table.

Gordon Bailey (see References below) illustrates two types of chafing dish, designated Type A and Type B, the present handle probably being from one of Type B. This type was supported on downward extensions from the handles, for which three were required to form a tripod and provide stability. An example of a handle from a Type A dish is recorded as UKDFD 56048. Dishes of this type were fabricated with an integral base on the underside of the bowl, and were fitted with two diametrically opposite handles.

Description:

A cast copper-alloy fragment of zoomorphic vessel (posnet or skillet) handle dating to the late medieval period. The surviving part is the terminal end of the handle, angling downwards with a hollow moulded dog's head being the prominent feature. The incomplete flat handle element has incised geometric decoration to the upper surface, the underside is plain.

Geometric designs applied to cast cooking vessels are typically characteristic of those made in the late medieval or early post-medieval period (c.15th-16th century). Similar linear decoration can be noted applied to vessel handle; UKDFD 24164. The zoomorphic feature, however, can be stylistically compared to another form of vessel embellishment; UKDFD 48878, dating to the late medieval period.
