Note
The distinction between plain annular brooches and circular buckles is not always clear. Although brooches generally have a constriction for the pin, and buckles do not, this is not an infallible rule. Where they survive, brooch pins are more usually pointed to pierce fabric, whereas buckle pins are blunt to pass though existing holes in a strap.

An unusual circular copper-alloy buckle of the medieval period. The frame is of flat sub-rectangular cross-section with bevelled inner and outer edges to the front face, and a very irregular radial width. At one point on the outer diameter there is a decorative axe-shaped projection with its curved 'blade' adjoining the edge of the frame. The back of the frame is flat with file-marks present on the surface. The pin is missing, but the generally similar examples cited below support the object's identification as a buckle. Although there is no defined constriction to locate a pin, as is present on some of the other examples, the narrowest width of the frame is approximately opposite the projection, which would tend to serve the same purpose.
