A square copper-alloy 'clan' button from a Scottish jacket. The button is of two-piece construction and depicts a heraldic device surrounded by an inscription in Gaelic lettering. The heraldic device is a round shield bearing the Scottish lion rampant over a crossed sword and battle-axe. The Gaelic inscription is ClAnn nAn GAel / An GuAllibh A Cheile (the Gaelic G looks like a number 3), which translates as "Family of the Gael, shoulder to shoulder." The front of the button is umbonate; the back has a circular recess, at the centre of which the (intact) wire shank is brazed or soldered. It is back-marked with the maker's mark, SWORD MAKE - MADE IN ENGLAND. There is a crossed sword trademark (registered in 1893) between the first two words.

The front of the button is convex and depicts the lozenge-shaped heraldic arms of a remarried widow heiress (see below). The back is flat and stamped with the maker's name, JENNENS & Co LONDON, plus the Prince of Wales plume.

The heraldic arms are those of Lady Guendolen Theresa Chetwynd-Talbot, daughter of Charles Chetwynd-Talbot, 19th Earl of Shrewsbury. Lady Guendolen was born in 1856 and married her first husband, Colonel Edward Chaplin, in 1877. However, Edward died in 1883, and in 1887, she married Major Archibald Cosmo Little. In 1891, Archibald inherited Upton House, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, from his father's estate, and it became the couple’s primary residence until their deaths: Archibald died there in 1934 and Guendolen in 1937. The respective heraldic bearings of Archibald (quarters 1 & 3), Edward (quarters 2 & 3) and Lady Guendolen herself (escutcheon in centre), are as described in Image 4.

Jennens & Co stamped their buttons with the Prince of Wales plume from 1860, implying the grant of a royal warrant. The company merged with Messrs Gaunt & Sons in 1924.

Following from the above, the button can be dated between 1887 and 1924.
