A decorative copper alloy finger ring dating to the Anglo-Saxon period. The hoop is of circular cross-section, which then flattens and widens at the top to create an elliptical bezel. Located to each side of the bezel is a small roundel and transverse rib, both facially grooved to form the shoulders of the ring. The bezel itself is deeply engraved with an abstact animal whose simplistic features are inspired by the Trewhiddle design form, its body parts embellished with indented dots. The engraved recesses of the design partly retain a decayed niello infill.

Similarities of the design can be compared with UKDFD 32480, UKDFD 56816 & SWYOR-A67E25.

* From Nigel Mills, 'Saxon & Viking Artefacts':
In 1774, a collection of silver and gold objects were found inside a silver chalice. The hoard was discovered by tin miners in a stream near St Austel in Cornwall. Some of the strap-ends and objects depicted animal designs in a distinctive form now known as 'Trewhiddle'. The animals are clearly defined and arranged singly in panels in a grotesque form.

A plain copper-alloy penannular ring of the late Anglo-Saxon period. It is of oval cross-section at the centre and tapers to a point at each overlapping end. The diameter may suggest its use as an earring rather than finger ring.

Although rings of this general type were worn as finger rings and earrings, they may also have had other uses such as decorative hair rings. The recorder states that the ring was discovered in the gravels of a brook near an Iron Age settlement. A silver finger ring dating to the later Anglo-Saxon period. The thin-sectioned bezel is generally lozenge-shaped and decorated with a symmetrically engraved cross motif within a linear frame. The cross consists of a simple vertical bar with flared terminals, and two side arms, both containing an additional chevron within the flare to create a forked terminal. The engraving partially retains niello infill which is dark blue in colour. The thicker sub-rectangular sectioned wire hoop is distorted and incomplete. On the back of the bezel are visible dappled marks and indentations, likely from planishing the section flat to form the bezel shape.
A complete finger ring fabricated from two strands of copper-alloy wire. One strand forms the plain circular-section hoop. The other strand forms the bezel, which consists of two co-planar spiral coils. The inner ends of the two coils extend below to form a short straight span connecting them. The outer ends of the two coils extend and are wound transversely around the hoop to join together the two components.

A virtually identical ring illustrated by Crummy (see References below) is dated to the early Roman period (1st century AD), but several precious metal examples of very similar construction have been recovered from pagan burials of the early Anglo-Saxon period. The tentative dating of the present ring is based on the more secure context associated with the burial finds, but the simple design, which Crummy notes 'clearly has native British links', may originally have been employed considerably earlier.
A penannular copper-alloy finger ring or ear ring of the late Anglo-Saxon period. It is generally of sub-triangular cross-section with tapered ends that terminate in a point at one end and a hook at the other. This may suggest that both terminals were once secured together by a simple twist.

The reference cited below illustrates similar copper-alloy rings with oblique line decoration and hooked ends from an early context. They are however, wire, and regular in their length and do not have the thicker middle section which is more common to the later period finger rings or ear rings.
