The new King of Hanover was unpopular in Britain, and these tokens (the reverse showing the new King slinking off to his new domain, in crude imitation of a gold sovereign) were minted as a satirical gesture, as well as being used for card counters. They continued to be struck until their production became illegal under the Counterfeit Medal Act of 1883.
