<em>In 1892, the firm had its headquarters in Hull. William Cussons Ltd were provision merchants, who remained in business until the Second World War. They occupied a building on the west side of Hull Market until 1923, when they moved to Bridgegate, on the site of the former Angel Inn. The range of values suggests that these tokens were used for business purposes as well as for staff refreshment.</em>

&quot;The London and Newcastle Tea Company ran a wholesale business selling a range of beverages and patent medicines. The firm had a free gift sales campaign up and running as early as 1875, with a network of agents across northern England, Scotland and Wales. These retailers sold the company's tea in packet sizes ranging from 2oz to 1lb, giving a brass check with each purchase. Customers were invited to save the checks until they had acquired enough to claim a prize such as a toy, an item of crockery, or a household gadget.&quot;
