											A complete pewter spoon, probably dating to the Tudor period. It has a fig-shaped bowl, a square-section handle, orientated lozengewise, and a discoidal knop. The knop is possibly a worn maidenhead* type, which has lost some of the facial detail. The recorder notes a possible maker's mark (not visible on the images) on the back of the bowl.<br />
<br />
* It is possible that this is a head-and-neck finial representing a child, probably the infant Jesus. These are found on small child-sized silver spoons, an early 17th century example of which is illustrated by G E Paget How, <i>English and Scottish Silver Spoons</i>, Vol.2, pp. 1945-199.

											An incomplete pewter spoon of probable early post-medieval date. The surviving part of the spoon consists of about one-third of the (probably oval) bowl and a short length of the handle. The bowl has a maker's mark in the form of a quincunx of pellets on the inside surface. The handle is of sub-rectangular cross-section and terminates in a 'rat-tail' heel on the underside of the bowl.<br />

											A section of the stem and knop of a seal-top spoon of the early post-medieval period. The knop has characteristic baluster moulding and a plain terminal disc. The stem is of circular section in the upper region and D-shaped in the lower section towards the break. The bowl is missing. (These were sometimes engraved with the initials of the owner, but many are left plain.) <br />

The figural finial from a copper-alloy apostle spoon. The robed figure is depicted standing on a moulded base, the attributes he carries under each arm are undetermined.<br />

Apostle spoons were sometimes made in sets of thirteen, one for each of the apostles, and the thirteenth depicting Christ. Individually, they were popular as christening gifts, as one bearing the child's particular patron saint could be given.
