A Roman steelyard weight cast in lead. This weight is unusual in that as it has copper alloy suspension loops protruding from the top and bottom, the vast majority of these are constructed using iron. The lead body of the weight is bi-conical in shape, measuring 46mm x 33mm.
It has a weight of 115 grams which is close to being four ’uncia’ (ounces) - approximately 109 grams, or one third of a Roman pound. The abbreviation for the modern pound (lb.) has its roots directly to the Roman pound ’Libra’ which was 327.45g.
