											A complete bronze spearhead of the Middle Bronze Age. It has a leaf-shaped blade with a central rib, and a tapered socket with side loops. The loops were provided to carry thongs, which helped to fasten the spearhead securely to its shaft.<br />
<br />
Spearheads of this type were introduced during the Acton Park industrial phase of the Middle Bronze Age, and were produced throughout the Taunton phase. Towards the end of the latter period, they began to be replaced by the basal looped type, and subsequently by spearheads with a transverse peg-hole through the socket.

											A complete bronze basal-looped spearhead. A spearhead of the Taunton industrial phase of the middle Bronze Age with a leaf shaped blade, rounded mid-rib and basal loops. The spearhead is in very good condition with a mid brown patination. Basal-looped spearheads supersede the earlier side-looped versions; it is thought that they gave an aerodynamic advantage.<br />
<br />
A spearhead of similar date was found on the Thames foreshore at Mortlake, with traces of the wooden shaft preserved within the socket. It was identified as hazel and radiocarbon dated to about 1,200 BC.

											An incomplete side-looped spearhead of the Middle Bronze Age. The spearhead is leaf-shaped, with a rounded mid-rib. It has fractured across the socket, leaving only vestigial evidence of one of the side-loops. There is also some damage further along the socket, and a blunted tip.<br />
<br />
Spearheads of this type were produced throughout the Acton Park and Taunton phases of the Middle Bronze Age, being joined towards the end of the period by the basal-looped type (see <a href="https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/artefact/bronze-age/spears/basal-looped-spearhead-755.html">UKDFD 755</a>), which possibly had improved aerodynamic characteristics.<br />
