Description:		A socket and stem from an early post-medieval candlestick. The socket has moulded rims at the top and bottom, and bands of tooled decoration around the body. There are six single bands and a broad strip of five bands. Each band is made up of squares of about 1mm in size. The stem is waisted with a moulded collar at the centre, and carries similar decoration above and below the collar and near the base. The underside of the base has a 4mm hole where the holder would have been attached to a drip tray.

Description:		A fragment of candle snuffer dating to the post medieval period. The part is an elaborate side panel from the wick tray element of a 'scissor-type' candle snuffer. These elaborate types appear to be European in manufacture, notably from Nuremberg, as recorded examples of British candle snuffers of the period are more plain by comparison. The decorated panel is rectangular with trefoil terminals (one terminal missing). Decoration consists of three blind holes on the surviving terminal, and four punched ring-and-dot motifs along the panel centre. On the reverse are two rivet holes and the remains of solder, where the panel was attached to the tray. A candle-wick trimmer is a scissors-like instrument for maintaining the light from candles at an optimum level. After burning for a little while, the light from a candle fades and it produces an increased amount of smoke. These effects are caused by the remains of the burnt wick, which could periodically be removed by the use of a trimmer. The tool is designed such that the debris removed is contained within the closed box to prevent it falling back into the molten wax pool. The cutter could also be used to extinguish the candle by cutting the wick below the flame. Wick trimmers have been used since the mid-15th century. See also UKDFD 33521 and HAMP-917D56.
