The jewelled silver head of a ball-headed pin. The pinhead is divided vertically into four equal segments by a fitted filigree-wire cage. Each of the four segments has three vertically aligned and symmetrically arranged collets, and there is an additional collet at the top centre. The collets at the centre of the segments, and the one at the top of the sphere, are larger than those at each end of the segments. The larger collets hold red gemstones and the smaller ones hold light-blue gemstones, most likely garnet and turquoise respectively. The filigree wire cage is fitted tightly, but not soldered, except possibly at the base. It is constrained laterally by the grooves into which the four vertical wires are fitted, and vertically by a ring of the filigree-wire that fits around the collet at the top centre. At the bottom centre of the sphere, there is a hole where the (missing) shaft of the pin was fitted.

The pinhead is most likely inspired by the art and jewellery of Merovingian France (mid 5th - mid 8th century AD), but we believe it is a relatively modern reproduction. A pin of very similar type, described as an 'Antique Victorian Austro Hungarian Garnet Turquoise Silver Gilt HatPin' (see Image 3), for example, has recently been sold online, and we have traced several other items of reproduction jewellery that adopt a similar theme.

A modern star-shaped 'Celestial Light of the Sky' object, most likely a dress accessory such as a hatpin or a lapel pin. The star would originally have been decorated with thirteen glass gems of various colours, a large one in the centre and two progressively smaller ones radiating outwards on each of the six rays. The circular indentations into which the glass gems were set are now all empty. The back of the object is flat and has a central mark that suggests it originally had a projecting shaft for attachment.

In the absence of the attachment shaft, the specific use of the object is uncertain. However, recently made 'retro' products of generally similar form (as advertised for sale on Etsy at the time of writing - see Image 3) are described with suggested potential use as various dress accessories and items of jewellery, including both hatpin and lapel pin. Larger examples may have been used as ornamental mounts to decorate jewellery boxes, etc.
