Description:

A small decorative silver object fashioned in the form of a scallop-shell, tentatively identified as a pendant. The shell has incised 'ribbing', a triangular, knop-ended terminal extending from the 'bottom', and a plain elongated stem extending from the 'top'. The distal end of the stem and the upper part of the shell are pierced with small single holes of similar size. The object is now distorted, but it seems likely that the elongated stem originally recurved to the upper part of the shell, and was riveted via the two holes to furnish a suspension loop.

The silver pendant cited in References below is of similar size and with similar incised ribbing to the present object, but lacks its elongated stem and triangular knopped terminal. Commenting below the entry, the author notes:
From about the fifteenth century onwards the scallop shell was also used as a general belt fitting and as a dress ornament which had lost most of its earlier links with pilgrimage. After the Reformation the scallop shell was to retain its popularity, but as a purely secular dress accessory.

Identification Note
As indicated above, the present identification is tentative, but has been made only after exploring various other possibilities, none of which proved productive. Included in the possible alternative identifications considered were handles for small dishes, trays and pots, clasps and fasteners, decorative casket fittings and spangles.
