The front of the body is moulded in high relief and depicts the facing head of a lion with its tongue protruding, all within a cabled border. The centre has been drilled through, which would suggest that the object was repurposed at some stage, possibly after the hook was lost. The back of the body is flat, with file marks and traces of solder present. There are three irregular perforations in the body, which appear to be casting flaws rather than a deliberate element of the design.
The front plate is moulded in the form of an openwork Lombardic-style 'S'. The wire hook has been formed into an S-shape with a tapered and pointed end.

Brian Read (see References below) suggests that the Lombardic 'S' possibly stands for 'Salvator', an invocation to Christ, the Saviour, or is alternatively associated with the Lancastrian livery collars of SS that were presented to the king's high-status followers. In the latter case, the 'S' may stand for either 'Soverayne' (i.e. Sovereign) or 'Souvenez' (i.e. Remember).
