The date of issue of these sterlings is somewhat uncertain, and at one time they were even attributed to Edward II. After considering all the evidence, Elias (see Reference below) came to the following conclusion: "... we find that the date of 1344 would be the most likely from the point of view of monetary history, which conclusion is, however, contradicted by conclusions drawn from the hoard evidence. If we accept the conclusions from the hoard evidence as decisive, then the years 1335-37 can be considered as a possibility."

No mintmark is visible on the coin, and it does not exactly correspond with any of the varieties listed by Elias (see ref. below). As the author comments, however,
&quot;Of no Anglo-Gallic coin are there so many varieties in the legends as of the demi-gros of the Black Prince. In fact it would even be difficult to find two coins, not being die-duplicates, with exactly the same legend.&quot;

The reverse legend is an abbreviated version of GLORIA IN EXCELCIS DEO ET IN TERRA PAX, but the exact form is uncertain, as part of the legend is illegible. The suggested composition of that part of the legend (shown below in square brackets) is very speculative.
