Description:		A billon lion or hardhead of Queen Mary, countermarked during the reign of James VI. The coin was originally issued between 1542 and 1558. In order to address the issue of counterfeiting, which was prevalent at the time, hardheads and placks of Queen Mary were called in in 1575, and those that were genuine were countermarked with a heart and star. The device was based on the arms of the Earl of Morton, who was Regent at the time.

Description:		Billon lion or hardhead of Francis and Mary of Scotland. At the time of its issue, this small and very base coin was worth three-halfpence Scottish, or the equivalent of a French denier. It was issued during Mary's very short marriage to Francis, the Dauphin of France in the late 1550's, and has the FM monogram that reflected the dual monarchy of France and Scotland from 1558-1560. However, despite the miniscule denomination of this coin, it was heavily counterfeited.
