The back face is plain. The arms of Melrose are a 'mell' or mallet, and a 'rose' - a punning hieroglyphic allusion to the town's name.

											A round cast lead communion token for Orwell, Kinross-shire Scotland. The obverse inscription is "VRVLE" for Orwell Kirk. The reverse has a geometric design. The place-name ORWELL has had several different spelling variations over the years.<br />
<br />
In 1315 the chapel of Orwell was bequeathed to the Abbey of Dunfermline by King Robert the Bruce. A charter of the Bishop of St. Andrews is entitled "Carta Willelmi Episcopi de Ecclesia de Kynros et Capella de Vrwell" in reference to the foregoing gift, &c.<br />

											An unattributed Scottish communion token. It is cast in lead and rectangular in shape. The obverse has the letter T in a plain circle, all within a raised rectangular border. It was found in the same location as <a href="https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/coins/tokens-jetons-and-medalets/miscellaneous/token-40028.html">UKDFD 40028</a>, which has a similar letter T, but within a heart-shaped recess.<br />
<br />
The communion tokens illustrated by Alexander Brook (<i>Scottish Church Tokens</i>) that most closely resemble the present one are those for Turriff in Aberdeenshire. However, the findspot is well over 100 miles away from this location, so any connection seems unlikely.
