An early medieval pseudo-imperial tremissis of Gaul, dating to the 6th century AD.

The obverse bears a bust that appears to be Merovingian in style (cf. MEC 1, 371), while the form of the reverse design has features that are associated with Visigothic tremisses (cf. MEC 1, 193-197 - note particularly Victory's sail-like wing, and head depicted as a cross). The devolved nature of both the obverse and reverse of the present coin suggests that it might be a contemporary imitation rather than an official issue. (A Merovingian copy of a Visigothic tremissis?)

The legends are very blundered, and the transcriptions shown below should be regarded as approximate. It is not possible to identify the particular Byzantine emperor whose coin provided the original prototype.
