A small bronze coin of approximately the same size as a fractional silver unit of the late Iron Age. The obverse appears to depict a Celticised head facing right. The style is somewhat similar to that of certain silver units of the Dobunni (e.g. UKDFD 3101 - see obverse comparison, Image 6), although the findspot is not consistent with the Dobunnic tribal area. The reverse is very unclear, but plausibly depicts a Celticised horse. The coin is most likely a contemporary base-metal forgery, which would originally have been silver-plated.
A bronze unit of the Carthaginian Empire, struck circa 4th to 3rd century BC.

Although cross-Channel trade had been conducted since the late Bronze Age, the earliest use of coins as currency in Britain - imported coins struck in Europe - is estimated to be circa 125 BC. It seems likely, therefore, that earlier coins, such as the present example, arrived long after they were originally struck, possibly having circulated extensively on the Continent beforehand. Several similar coins are recorded on the PAS database, e.g. KENT-85BE55 and KENT-6EED42. Another Carthaginian bronze coin is recorded as UKDFD 56752.
