Description:		Hoard of Antonine denarii including two broken silver-gilt brooches. The British Museum comments: ’Found with the aid of a metal detector scattered across an area of 60’ square. All the coins and both brooches were at a depth of 3" to 8". A typical Roman Antonine coin hoard comprising of 58 Silver Denarii, the latest coin is of Faustina II usually attributed to the years 161-176 AD between the accession of her husband Marcus Aurelius as senior emperor and her death. However, as it is the single representative in the hoard it suggests abandonment either very early in that reign, or given that there is evidence of this coin being produced as early as 157AD, in the final years of Antoninus Pius. In any case since the coin is datable to AD 157-176 the latter year given above as the possible burial date of the hoard.’ Associated finds: 1. Silver-gilt trumpet brooch (UKDFD 690) 2. Fragment of a silver-gilt trumpet brooch.

Description:		A uniface impression on a lead planchet of the obverse of a coin of Septimius Severus. The impression appears to have been die-struck and is of a size consistent with the gold aureus or silver denarius of that emperor. The legend, SEVERVS AVG PART MAX, was used on coins during the period AD 200 - 201. The probability is that this is a trial striking to prove a new die, a view that is reinforced by the sharpness of the impression. The style of the head, however, is rather badly proportioned, and there is a strong possibility that it was not produced from an official die. It seems likely, therefore, that it is a trial striking by a contemporary forger. Lead seals were also commonly used during this period, but the absence of any means of attachment argues against such a use in this case.
