Reverse legend: MONETA NAMVR - Mint (or Money) of Namur

Towards the end of the 13th century, sterlings of the Low Countries began to circulate widely (but unofficially) in England, and this type, with its bare-headed bust, was colloquially known as a ’pollard’. The issuers of these coins based their designs on the contemporary English pennies (sterlings), which enjoyed a high reputation for quality. This was done to promote their circulation, and by the early years of the 14th century, it was difficult to distinguish between the English pennies and their Continental imitations.

Philip issued English-style nobles, half nobles and quarter nobles in response to English demands that wool bought in Calais should be paid for in nobles. The quarter noble is possibly the rarest of the three denominations, all of which are rare. One noble is recorded on the PAS as NMGW-C601CE and one half noble as SUR-54DB38, but no quarter noble of this issue appears to have been recorded on that database. Interestingly, a poor quality copy of the quarter is recorded on the present database as UKDFD 23740.
