A continental imitation of a Henry IV quarter noble. Flan bent through about 90 degrees.

A coin from the same obverse and reverse dies, found in Norfolk in 2004, was sold as Lot # 93 in Spink auction 5010, 1966. In the listing of the lot, the coin is described thus:

"This curious piece bears several conflicting features. The large fleurs with central pellet, on the cusps and round the central compartment on the reverse, date from the post-treaty period of Edward III and were phased out early in the reign of Richard II (cf. Schneider 101 and 139). The four lis in the French arms (arms 1) were superseded by arms 2 during the heavy coinage of Henry IV (cf. Schneider 192). The curious 'rocking horse' lions on the reverse do not correspond to any official English issue. The weight and fabric are clearly light and, despite its find spot, this coin appears to be of Flemish origin. There is another example, from the same obverse die but from a different reverse, with more naturalistic lions, in the Hunterian Museum."

The UKDFD is grateful to Peter D Spencer for providing the above information.

Richard II (Withers Type 5b) or Henry IV heavy coinage (Withers Type 3a) halfpenny of London.
The king's name is completely illegible and the same face punch was used for the dies of both reigns. The breast punch, however, tends to suggest that Henry IV is most likely in this case, as the Withers Type 5 coins of Richard II tend to have two lobes at the base (cf. UKDFD 37039), whereas Type 3 coins of Henry IV tend to have a flat base and an irregular D-shaped depression in the neck (cf. UKDFD 36660). The hair punches also appear to differ slightly on the coins of Henry IV.

Henry IV light coinage penny, struck at the York mint of Archbishop Henry Bowet.
Note re attribution
As virtually all letters of the king's name are illegible, this attribution is tentative, and relies heavily on interpreting the mark on the king's breast as an annulet. The single extant letter of the king's name is here read as 'E', but the amount of space that follows, before reaching 'x REX', seems excessive for the remaining four letters of HENRIC (the usual form on this issue*). It is also noted that the double annulet stops usually found in the reverse legend of this issue do not appear to be present.

* Subsequent research indicates that the form HENRICVS also occurs on this issue. This would seem to be the case with the present coin, and is supported not only by the space available, but also by vestigial traces of the base of a 'V' in the expected position.

The coin is a hitherto unrecorded variety of Withers Type 1. The obverse legend has an apostrophe and pellet after HENRIC, and a double-pellet (colon) after REX. Saltire stops are normally used on the halfpennies of this reign, with only one coin, Withers Type 1a, having single pellet stops alone between the words.

The UKDFD is grateful to Paul Withers for confirmation of this identification, and for assigning to it the designation ’Type 1b’.
