Description:		Richard III halfpenny, London. Note regarding attribution The unclear initial mark, partial flatness of obverse legend, and presence of a saltire after RICARD, initially raise doubts about the attribution of this coin to Richard III as opposed to Richard II. However, the shape of the shoulders is consistent with the later reign, and the legend almost certainly ends with REX, as the bases of the last two letters are reasonably clear. No known halfpennies of Richard II have an obverse legend with this ending. The presence of the saltire after the king's name is unrecorded for this reign, but is not an obstacle to the attribution, as it occurs on some halfpennies of both Edward IV and Henry VII.
