A note on Roman naming conventions
Roman male names are made up of at least two elements: a praenomen and a nomen - a given name and a family name. However, many illustrious men acquired a third name or cognomen, or in some cases even a fourth name or agnomen. These additional names were a means of distinguishing those who had accomplished important achievements, and were much like nicknames, but they assumed greater importance and, like the family name, were often inherited by descendants of the man on whom they were originally bestowed.

There were relatively few praenomina (a dozen or so common ones), and the practice of abbreviating them by a single letter was common on the coinage, and inscriptions in general. On the present coin, the letter 'L' is for the praenomen 'Lucius'. Similarly 'M' is for 'Marcus' and 'C' is for 'Caius'. ('Caius' and 'Gaius' are the same praenomen, as 'C' and 'G' were not differentiated in the early Roman alphabet.)

It was not uncommon for Roman men to take the same names as their father, and the present coin is an example of the third generation adopting this practice. The letters 'f' and 'n' in the description above indicate that the Lucius Calpurnius Piso Frugi issuing the coin is the son (filius) and grandson (nepos) of men with exactly the same names.
