The coin is overstruck on an antoninianus of his predecessor, Carausius, and the reverse is from a die of Carausius with mint control letters in the field that were only used during that reign. The overstriking is evident, as the ending of the later emperor's legend has failed to impress the coin, leaving the beginning of the original legend naming Carausius, IMP CA[R], still present. The possibility of a double-striking of the obverse can be ruled out, as the letter-spacing of IMP CA differs on the two instances of those letters. The mint signature, ML, is mostly off-flan, but the surviving tops of the two letters preclude any doubt.
