An incomplete Celtic silver unit of hitherto unrecorded type, but most likely attributable to the Trinovantes or Catuvellauni. Approximately sixty percent of the coin survives.

The unusual form of the eye on the obverse bust is the same as that found on the 'Thatcher's Sister' and 'Face Over Horse' (ABC 2383 and ABC 2386) silver units of the Trinovantes/Catuvellauni, but the headband (although much simplified) and the apparently braided hair have more in common with the 'Norfolk Diadem' (ABC 1501) units of the Iceni.

The form of the horse on the reverse is similar to that on the 'Harlow Horses' (ABC 2502) half units, and the present coin may turn out to be the equivalent unit issue.

The UKDFD is grateful to Liz Cottam for help with the identification of this coin and for recording it on the Celtic Coin Index.

Description:

A gold stater of the 'Middle Whaddon Chase' type, designated the 'Pole Wheel Type' in Ancient British Coins (ABC).

The type is attributed to the Trinovantes by Van Arsdell and dated as shown below. However, ABC notes:
"There are 33 early uninscribed types, found mainly in the eastern part of our North Thames Region, especially Essex, which can't comfortably be attributed either to the Trinovantes nor to the Catuvellauni. They are mostly extremely rare types - only seven were published by Van Arsdell - and they don't seem to slot into any of the principal North Thames series. We have therefore catalogued them as 'Eastern' and split them into three groups, chiefly on the basis of their metal and design:
1, Southern-style Qc gold types
2. Cantian-inspired gold and silver types
3. Uncertain silver and bronze types
Some of these 33 Eastern coins may have been issued by one or more of the 'several other tribes' who surrendered to Caesar in 54BC. Some may have been minted by Cantian rulers who occupied Essex before Dubnovellaunos did. Others may have been struck by refugees from the Gallic War who settled around the Thames estuary. Mint sites: unknown."

The present coin is in the second of the above groups.
