A uniface cast lead token with cross-and-pellets design. The heavy weight and laminated appearance suggest that two or more tokens might be fused together.

The cross and pellets reverse design of medieval English pennies ended during the reign of Henry VII, but continued on small change (halfpennies and farthings) until its final use on the halfpennies of James I. It is possible that the inconveniently small size of these lower denominations led to the copying of their design for lead tokens of the same denomination but more convenient size. The design was, for example, used on the boy-bishop lead tokens until the reign of Henry VIII (e.g. UKDFD 8883)..
From the reign of Edward I to that of Henry VIII, certain large churches and abbeys elected a boy bishop to serve each year at Christmas time. The boy was chosen from the church choir, and his term of office ran from December 6 (St. Nicholas’ Day) to December 28 (Innocents’ Day). His duties included preaching sermons and distributing tokens to the congregation. The tokens could be used at local shops to buy food and drink, the church having made arrangements to reimburse the proprietors.
