Description:		A double-sided, lozenge-shaped brass gaming counter of the late Victorian period. The obverse of the counter depicts a hand of four playing cards fanned out. The reverse has a registration kitemark indicating that design rights were granted to Charles Dipple & Son of Birmingham on the 5th of October, 1883. The variable elements of the registration kitemark are interpreted as shown on Image 4. RD at the centre simply means 'Registered'.

Description:		Henry I 'Full Face/Cross Fleury' (BMC Type X) penny. A fragment of approximately 35 percent of the coin remains. Although only four letters of the moneyer's name survive on the fragment, it is very probably Rodbert or its variant Rodberd. Moneyers of this name are known at Canterbury, Gloucester, Hereford, Rochester, Thetford, Wallingford and possibly York*, but interestingly the only one known - at least at the present time - to have struck in BMC X is the Rodbert at Rochester, a mint town close to the findspot of the coin. Although it would require a die-duplicate of the coin to attribute it with confidence to Rochester, it is a fact that Norman coins circulated less widely and often tended to remain closer to their place of minting than is the case with their Plantagenet and later counterparts. * The only Henry I coin of 'Rodbert at York' I have traced is a penny recorded as EMC 1200.0036. However, I believe this to be misattributed and, in fact, another specimen of BMC X struck at Rochester. The EMC coin suffers from what would appear to be a broken die that particularly affects the reverse legend. The moneyer's name is certain, but immediately after the copulative, ·ON·, there is very probably an R, followed by damaged metal occupying the space of one letter. Thereafter, two clear letters, VE, complete the mint signature. I believe the signature is ROVE, an extension of the known forms, RO and ROV, all three phonetic variants of the town's name, Rofeceastre, as rendered in the Domesday Book. It is even possible that the EMC coin is a die-duplicate of the present fragment, but the condition of the latter is too poor to be certain.
