Description: A contemporary silver-clad, base-metal cored forgery of a denarius of Augustus, the official version of which was struck at Lyons, 2BC-AD4.

Although the coin is of convincing style, the low weight, along with traces of blistering, surface tearing and sub-surface copper corrosion, indicates that it is a contemporary silver-clad, base-metal forgery (fourrée).

Harness Stud https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/artefact/medieval/harness-pendants-and-pendant-suspension-mounts/harness-stud-57908.html Fri, 22 Mar 2024 12:45:34 GMT Harness pendants, studs and suspension mounts Harness Stud
Description: A shield-shaped heraldic harness stud of the medieval period. The shield bears an engrailed cross on a field of red enamel with an apparently similar charge in each of the four angles. The identification of these charges is somewhat tentative, but the most likely possibility would seem to be that they are fleurs-de-lis. The integral rivet on the back of the stud is blunt-ended.

The arms are possibly those of a member of the Ashhurst (or Ashurst) family, whose arms are blazoned: Gules, a cross engrailed between four fleurs-de-lis argent.

See also UKDFD 56545, which has further information on the Ashhurst family. The direct male line of the family from Simon de Ashhurst, in the reign of Henry III (1216-1272), to John, in the reign of Henry VI (1422-1461), is shown as image 3.

Harness Pendant https://www.ukdfd.co.uk/v46/artefact/medieval/harness-pendants-and-pendant-suspension-mounts/harness-pendant-57907.html Fri, 22 Mar 2024 12:41:34 GMT Harness pendants, studs and suspension mounts Harness Pendant
Description: A lozenge-shaped harness pendant of the medieval period. The pendant appears to depict a crowned letter 'U' of Lombardic style, flanked on either side by uncertain but different motifs*, all on a double-line base. The design is set on a field of white enamel, most of which survives. The integral suspension loop is intact.

* Possibly, but very tentatively, a figure kneeling in prayer (left) and another reading Bible (right).

For a harness pendant with a comparable design, but different letter, see PAS: LIN-1CF623.
