In English law a distinction is made between contracts and other legal documents "made under seal" and those “made under hand”, the former having a higher standing than the latter. In earlier times, the seals – applied in wax - would name the individual or bear arms or other devices by which he or she could be identified. However, as the population became more generally literate, the practice developed of signing documents by hand and applying a separate seal, where appropriate. The seal used did not have to be personal or unique, as the originators of the document were identifiable by their signatures, and the legal status was conferred by the seal’s presence. Seal matrices of the present type were used to make these impressions in wax, in the manner of the earlier personal seals. By the 19th century, however, courts were beginning to accept non-wax alternatives as an indication of documents “made under seal”. These alternatives, some of which remain in use, include paper wafers affixed to the document, impressions made in the paper with dies, and even the words "Seal" or "L.S." (Latin: locus sigilli - place of the seal) by the signature.
