Description: Elizabeth I threehalfpence dated 1572, initial mark, ermine.

Coins valued at threehalfpence and threefarthings were struck during the reign of Elizabeth I as a means of providing small change. By this time, the silver halfpenny was inconveniently small and the farthing had last been struck during the reign of Edward VI. A payment of one halfpenny or one farthing could be made by tendering a halfgroat or penny, and receiving a threehalfpence or threefarthings respectively as change.
