Description: A combined pipe tamper, ring and bowl cleaner of the second half of the 18th century.

Gordon Bailey (see References below) describes this type thus:
"A novelty multi-tool produced in the second half of the 18th century was the combined ring, tamper and bowl cleaner. In this design, the outer shell of the tamper could be unscrewed to expose a corkscrew-like spike for reaming the pipe bowl. This device was an early hint of the multi-purpose pipe tools that would join tobacconists' accessory displays from the late 19th century."
