Description: An ornate rectangular buckle plate dating to the Roman period. The plate has a slightly raised external frame and is decorated with symmetrical champlevé cells within, some of which still contain a blue enamel infill. The central design is geometric, consisting a horizontal bar of multiple triangular cells to the upper and lower sides, and three repeating circular motifs linked with right-angled key patterns between. At each end of this decorative band is a naturalistic foliate design which encloses the central geometry. For attachment purposes, there is a rivet position located at each corner of the plate. Each of these was originally embellished with a separate raised annulus of dark blue enamel fused to the design, but only two of these remain. On the back of the plate, two of the four copper-alloy rivets remain in situ, whilst the remaining two holes are filled with corrosion. Evidence of fracture and iron staining is noted at one end of the plate, where a separate buckle frame was once attached. The plate has been pared and reduced in thickness at this point, where a small part of the sheet metal backplate remains in place.

Description: Fragment of a late-Roman ’dolphin and bird’ buckle. The addition of the bird on the side of the frame makes this a rare find but the known distribution pattern of this type does include Lincolnshire down to Cambridgeshire and the north west of East Anglia.
