Description: |
A cranked watch winder/key of the Georgian period. The winder has an openwork heart-shaped handle, to which the ovate looped fastener of a watch chain is still attached. The key itself is T-shaped with one side of the T-bar extended to accommodate the articulated handle. The T-bar extension is decorated with reel and bead mouldings and there is a moulded cube at the junction of the stem and bar. The stem will have a square slotted end to engage on the winder within the watch, and the short side of the bar will have a smaller slot for turning the watch-hands to adjust the time. Note The material is recorded as gold, but may possibly be silver-gilt, which is more durable for the application. |
